The Statesman's Book of John of Salisbury, (Hardcover)

"The Statesman's Book of John of Salisbury" presents a seminal translation of selections from the "Policraticus", arguably the most influential work of political theory produced in the twelfth century. As a comprehensive study of the ethical and practical requirements of governance, the work explores the intricate relationship between the church and the state, the duties of a prince, and the fundamental nature of law. John of Salisbury offers a sophisticated defense of the organic metaphor of the state-the body politic-and provides one of the earliest and most famous medieval justifications for the removal of tyrants.
This edition, edited and translated by John Dickinson, provides modern readers with access to the core arguments that shaped Western political thought for centuries. The text delves into the virtues required for leadership, the corrupting influence of court life, and the necessity of justice as the foundation of any stable society. By blending classical wisdom with medieval theology, "The Statesman's Book of John of Salisbury" remains an essential resource for those studying the history of political ideas, medieval history, and the development of constitutional thought. It stands as a testament to the intellectual rigor of the 12th-century Renaissance and continues to offer profound insights into the nature of power and authority.

This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
